18 Ways To Use Oils In Your Home

Essential oils aren’t just for smelling nice and making you feel good about yourself, you can use them around your home and reduce your reliance on mass produced cleaning products.

Our under-the-sink cupboard has had a major clean-out and I’ve removed a lot of products that we no longer see a need for.

All-purpose cleaner: Add three drops each of lemon oil and tea tree oil to a small spray bottle of warm water, then spray countertops to naturally disinfect

Natural mosquito repellent: Terrashield is the repellent blend and is a natural bug spray. You can make your own by combining any of the following with 1/4 cup witch hazel/vodka and 1/4 cup water.

  • Tea Tree oil)
  • Cedarwood
  • Citronella
  • Lemon/Orange
  • Clove (use sparingly — it’s very strong!)
  • Peppermint (avoid if breastfeeding)
  • Lavender
  • Eucalyptus

Sports gear: If you or your kids play sports, add two drops each of tea tree and lemon oils to 1 litre of warm water; next add four tablespoons of baking soda and mix. Use to clean sweaty activewear and sports gear.

Clean air: Diffuse cinnamon essential oil in the air and enjoy its anti-microbial properties. Or Purify cleansing blend if you want to get rid of a bad smell (perfect for teenager’s bedrooms)

Washing machine: Add 10-20 drops of your favourite scent per load.

Eliminate shower curtain scum: Mix  four drops of eucalyptus and four drops of melaleuca oil with warm water; spray onto your shower to kill mould naturally.

Clean burnt pans: Use a few drops of lemon oil and some boiling water to help remove burnt food from pots and pans.

Home Sweet Home: Diffuse 4 drops Citrus Bliss with one drop Passion when you have guests and they will rave about how amazing your home smells.

Carpet cleaner: Mix 20 drops of melaleuca oil with Borax for homemade carpet powder.

Kill pests: Spray wild orange essential oil and clove oil to kill pests on contact.

Eliminate mould: Add tea tree oil to your diffuser to kill mould and other pathogens in the air.

Bathtub scrub: Mix one-half cup of baking soda, one-half cup of vinegar and five drops of bergamot or lime oil; use as a scrub for a sink or bathtub.

Freshen rubbish bin can: Put a cotton ball with two drops each of lemon and tea tree oils at the bottom of your bin to help decrease the odour and detoxify. Or use Purify.

Wash produce: To clean fruit and vegetables, add two drops of lemon oil to a large bowl of water then wash.

Clean kitchen smell: Add a few drops of clove, cinnamon or lemon oils to a simmering pan of water to get rid of cooking smells.

Bathroom freshener: Put a cotton ball soaked in lime or lemon oil behind the toilet for a bathroom refresher.

Purify fridge: To freshen up the fridge or freezer when cleaning, add a few drops of lime, grapefruit or bergamot oil to the rinsing water.

Get rid of shoe smell: To remove the smell from shoes, add a few drops of tea tree and lemon oils to freshen them up.
