If you’re reading this blog you’re probably asking yourself this question.
It’s not until we look at the science behind essential oils and how they work with our bodies that we can truly appreciate the application.
Essential oils are derived from plants, they are made from carbon and water, just like us.
Plants use these compounds to protect them and help them thrive. This can include protecting from predation by animals or protection from parasites.
When we use an essential oil our bodies recognise the compounds and our cells react to the oils in a number of ways.
For exercise we can use a variety of oils for preparing our bodies and minds for what is to come, and for helping our bodies to recover.
Here are a few oils that can be used for preparing for a great session or event:
This is the grounding blend, it’s a mix of Spruce Leaf, Ho Wood Leaf, Frankincense Resin, Blue Tansy Flower, Blue Chamomile Flower, Osmanthus Flower and Fractionated Coconut Oil.
This grounding blend promotes tranquility while bringing harmony to the mind and body, and balance to the emotions.
Use Balance for improved confidence, calm and general awesomeness (the smell reminds me of running in the forest, which is my happy place).
Put a couple of drops into your palm and rub your hands together, then cup and take two to three deep breathes. Rub your hands on your neck and shoulders.
Also apply to the spine and soles of your feet. You can also put in your pony tail if you have long hair.
It’s especially great before a workout or competition. It provides clarity and confidence so you can focus on the task in hand without any additional stress.
Motivate is the Encouraging blend and one of the six blends that make up the emotional aromatherapy set.
This blend is made up of Peppermint Plant, Clementine Peel, Coriander Seed, Basil Herb, Yuzu Peel, Melissa Leaf, Rosemary Leaf, Vanilla Bean Absolute.
Motivate will help you find the courage that comes from believing in yourself again.
Apply to your pulse points before your session.
This is a great oil to use as an anchor to positive association with exercise. The mix of citrus and mint provides an uplifting and energising experience.
Peppermint essential oil invigorates the lungs and helps cool the body.
Breathing it in before a workout or applying a couple drops topically on the back of your neck during a workout can be very refreshing and invigorating.
Rub on the soles of your feet as you’re getting dressed for a run to add an extra zing to your step.
Frankincense is the King of Oils. There’s a saying that if you don’t know what oil to use then go for Frankincense. It supports the body for so many things.
Frankincense every day is great for supporting your brain. Put a drop in a glass of water first thing in the morning.
It is helpful for supporting mood as well as providing a soothing effect on our muscles after a workout. Use when you have any aches.
Using oils can support both our body and our mind. They won’t make you faster, but they can help support your recovery as well as your mood when you need to be focussed.
They get into each and every cell in our body. While you may choose to use Frankincense for muscle support, you may also notice improving other aspects.
Like most things, if you want to notice any positive changes you then you will have to make them a habit. Start with one thing and then once you’ve mastered that move onto the next.
